College Houses (UT of Austin Cooperative Housing): This was to be College Houses’ first annual report. Sadly, Covid-19 hit and we weren’t able to take the project to print. (See, on page 2, Kim still had the welcome letter to write.) They wanted something more DIY and handcrafted, much like a zine. So I incorporated lots of doodle design elements, as when you’re absent-mindedly doodling in class while listening to a lecture. It was to be printed on recycled newsprint like paper stock with a translucent green sheet in the middle explaining why cooperative models are so great. I’m sure we’ll pick this up again and just plug in new numbers whenever they’re ready.

The Kohala Center (Independent, community-based center for research, conservation, and education): Beautiful Hawaiian imagery graces this clean and airy layout. I was lucky enough to score this project thanks to an old business partner who relocated to Hawaii’s big island. To be fair, the layout was initiated by another designer, but couldn’t complete the project. So I just carried it through.

People Fund (Small business loans to established businesses, nonprofits, and start-ups creating economic opportunity and financial stability): I was able to work with PeopleFund on their branding and all their Annual Reports for 6-7 years). We stayed with the same format, but would annually change the theme and design direction while staying close to their grassroots brand promise with hand-drawn elements and recycled paper stock.

Texans Care For Children (Statewide, non-profit, non-partisan, multi-issue children's policy organization): Not technically an annual report, but rather an interesting format and unique function. TCFC wanted something easy to hand out to Texas legislators on a variety of topics affecting Texas children. We created an icon guide for each topic focus (health, protection, early opportunities, youth success, mental well-being, and resources). After an introduction, sixty pages (or thirty 2-sided sheets) would highlight specific points relevant to a specific policy issue. Those sheets were perforated to be torn out from the booklet to hand out to legislators, as needed. The booklet was also printed in 2-color so that each page could also be xeroxed if multiple copies were needed.

Austin Habitat for Humanity (building strong, stable, and self-reliant communities in Central Texas): Celebrating Life’s Firsts was the focus of this Annual Report, specifically people celebrating their first homes. Sketchy textures and hand-drawn elements offer a hand-crafted feel to the piece.

Austin Habitat for Humanity (building strong, stable, and self-reliant communities in Central Texas): How can you get an entire annual report in one tri-fold brochure? Well, here is our answer. The front features a door, open the flap and you see stats and the Board of Directors. Each flap unfolds to reveal more. This was a unique solution to a budgetary challenge.
